Meme Wars: The Untold Story of the Online Battles Upending Democracy in America

Join us for an exciting conversation at the intersection of disinformation and journalism! Why does it matter to democracy, how big is the problem in the US, and how does it differ at the national and local levels? 

Dr. Joan Donovan is the Research Director of the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy. Dr. Donovan leads the field in examining internet and technology studies, online extremism, media manipulation, and disinformation campaigns. Dr. Donovan leads The Technology and Social Change Project (TaSC). TaSC explores how media manipulation is a means to control public conversation, derail democracy, and disrupt society. TaSC conducts research, develops methods, and facilitates workshops for journalists, policy makers, technologists, and civil society organizations on how to detect, document, and debunk media manipulation campaigns. Dr. Donovan and the TaSC team produce Media Manipulation Case BookMeme War Weekly (MWW) newsletter, and BIG, If True webinar series. Dr. Donovan will discuss the work she leads at HKS, disinformation-related concerns she have moving ahead, and her new book, Meme Wars

Marc Levy is founder and editor of the digital-only news site Cambridge Day, serving Cambridge, MA, and surrounding communities. Its writing may represent context and analysis of a situation based on fact-based reporting. It also provides an opportunity for expression of opinion in which diverse voices are heard. He has been in journalism for more than two decades, mainly in New England, as a reporter, columnist, copy editor and editor.

Major Garrett is chief Washington correspondent for CBS News. He also is the host of The Takeout podcast. He has covered politics and the White House for various publications and television networks including U.S. News & World Report, The National Journal, The Washington Times, CNN and  Fox News. He is author of "The Big Truth" (2022), "Mr. Trump's Wild Ride", "The Enduring Revolution" and "The 15 Biggest Lies in Politics."
