The Harvard Kennedy School New England Alumni Association and the Harvard Club of Boston are pleased to invite you to the HKSNEAA's Annual Dinner with keynote speaker Nicholas Burns, who has served as the Department of State's Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs (2005-2008), U.S. Ambassador to NATO (2001-2005), U.S. Ambassador to Greece (1997-2001) and State Department Spokesman (1995-1997). Burns is currently the Goodman Family Professor of the Practice of Diplomacy and International Relations at the Harvard Kennedy School. 

Professor Burns will discuss the changing nature of American power, expectations of the future global balance of power, changing cooperation and competition among the world's powerful nations, and ideas on how countries can collaborate to address major challenges. These challenges include the avoidance of conflict in the South China Sea, limiting nuclear proliferation, enhancing cooperation on energy and climate issues, addressing war in the Middle East, and building more effective economic cooperation. Register by May 26th at noon.

Education reform initiatives in Massachusetts have garnered much public attention in recent years, especially those that seek to close racial achievement gaps. This event seeks to discuss the political and public policy challenges and successes surrounding two highly visible case studies: The Lawrence Public Schools Turnaround Plan and the Lexington Public Schools’ METCO Program. The Party system, Washington wrote in 1797, "opens the door to foreign influence and corruption, which find a facilitated access to the government itself through the channels of political parties Thus the policy and the will of one country are subjected to the policy and will of another".   Washington's remarks seem strangely compelling and prescient given Mueller's current Investigation into Trump's alleged ties with Russia.  One might have expected that the press and the pundits recall Washington's warning.  But they haven't. Perhaps because pundits worry that undermining the party system may undermine the Republic as a whole.  But perhaps there is a good alternative to the (two) party system. The decentralized digital ledger technology, Blockchain, has opened an incentive structure economy where everyone can participate, fostering democratization of wealth. Bitcoin was created by Satoshi Nakamoto on Blockchain technology as an act of defiance to the 2008 recession. $11 trillion in credit default swaps will be moving to Blockchain this year. We often hear how Bitcoin price volatility has made a few people rich on paper, but we seldom hear how regulations will come into effect. In this event, we will hear from public policy leaders how they are assessing the regulations to bring in effect the future of decentralized cryptocurrency.
